I founded Ocean Cowboy Outfitters in 2024 after carrying an idea for nearly a decade: building a do-it-all dive backpack for freedivers and spearfishers who want to go farther on foot and expand their range safely and comfortably.
I grew up abalone diving with my family, which eventually led me to a career as a marine scientist—while remaining a lifelong freediver and spearo. That background shapes everything we do: gear has to work in real conditions, hold up over time, and keep people safe.
Ocean Cowboy Outfitters is a family-run company based in Portland, Oregon. Our goal is to create gear and experiences that help people better connect with aquatic habitats—whether that means harvesting food for themselves, learning where their seafood comes from, or reaching dive locations that were previously impractical with conventional dive bags.
Designed for the cold water, turbulent seas, and rugged coastline of the Pacific Northwest, the Cabezón-1 (Cab-1) spearfishing backpack blends the waterproofing and storage of traditional dive bags with the comfort, durability, and load distribution of serious backpacking and hunting packs. It’s built for long approaches, uneven terrain, and places where failure isn’t an option.
We know we don’t have all the answers—and we don’t try to reinvent everything. Alongside our own designs, we retail trusted brands that are already nailing it, from local Oregon makers to proven manufacturers around the world. We curate intentionally, partner openly, and are proud to have other shops carry our house-designed gear.
In addition to retail, we offer local gear rentals and are developing in-water foraging experiences for those interested in getting to know Pacific Northwest seafood up close and personally.
We’re not here to make the process easier—just safer, more comfortable, and more reliable with better gear.
